LUDHIANA: The model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections being in force, there will be no shifting of men teachers to boys’ schools and women teachers to girls’ schools from April 1.
Director of public instructions (schools) Kamal Garg on Friday directed all the district education officer of Punjab not to implement the shifting orders. The authorities concerned, however, have written to the election commissioner for permission to shift the 811 teachers.
The latest directions from the DPI (schools) have brought a relief to the shifted teachers, who expect that the authorities now will rethink the decision. “For a proper development of students, both men and women teachers are required in schools,” a government schoolteacher from Ludhiana said on the condition of anonymity.
“Every government school should have co-education rule to prepare children for further education. If any teacher harasses any student, he alone deserves to be punished,” said the teacher.
Another teacher, who also wished not to be named, said dedicated and hardworking teachers should not have to suffer. Many cases of sexual harassment of students have been reported from Ludhiana and Bathinda districts, considering which, the DPI (schools) had issued a letter on January 30 to move 811 teachers from various districts of Punjab. They were required to report to their news schools from April 1.
A Jagraon-based teacher, who was accused of harassing student sexually, was shifted after an inquiry, and in Bathinda also, some teachers were shifted under similar circumstances.
Approached after the transfers were put on hold, state education minister Sikander Singh Maluka said it was because of the election code of conduct. “Moreover, many teachers have requested me not to do the shifting, so we will take a final call after the elections. Till further orders, the teachers who were shifted will work in their respective schools,” he said.
